Kimo Alama Keaulana & Lei Hulu
Kimo Alama Keaulana is one of Hawai'i's most respected and popular performers of traditional Hawaiian music. An 8th generation professional musician, dancer, chanter, teacher, composer and entertainer, Kimo Alama Keaulana is a recognized authority on ancient and modern hula and its music. As a kumu hula (hula master) and renowned dancer himself, he knows how to play the music to accompany hula.
Widely considered one of the best vocal interpreters of Hawaiian songs, Kimo understands the Hawaiian thinking behind the compositions. He is a natural stage performer and always "packs 'em in" wherever he plays. Lei Hulu is his band of hand-picked musicians and singers, who have all immersed themselves in the traditional Hawaiian genre and provide solid backup to Kimo's signature falsetto singing.
The most recent CD release by Kimo Alama Keaulana and Lei Hulu, "Hula Lives!" garnered two awards at the 2005 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.

Kimo Alama Keaulana will present these two very special seminars:
Friday November 14th - 10:45am to 12:15pm
"Costuming for the Hula"
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this presentation is going to be worth billions! Images of hula costumes from archival early photographs to modern advertising and competition performances will be examined and discussed. From the more predictable choices such as appropriate flowers and colors for each island, to common errors made today, this presentation will open your eyes and offer a few surprises. More importantly, it will teach you to "think Hawaiian" and make choices in costuming which will enhance your hula -- and give you an appreciation of the choices of others. A question and answer session will follow the presentation, and discussion is encouraged.
Friday November 14th - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
"Appropriate Songs for Hula"
Not every song in the Hawaiian language is appropriate for the hula. Participants will gain an understanding of appropriate hula musical material from the standpoint of the unwritten traditional Hawaiian culture as opposed to pop/post-"Hawaiian Renaissance" island culture. This session is recommended especially for teachers or those seriously interested in Hawaiian musical culture. A question and answer session will follow the presentation, and discussion is encouraged.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience the insights, wisdom and warmth of this great Hawaiian living resource --
